Want to learn more about how to use research evidence as a nutrition educator?

This self-paced course is designed to help nutrition education professionals review, evaluate, and interpret clinical and education-related human nutrition research. In the first module, you will learn how to categorize different types of studies and make judgements about strength of evidence. Module one also provides an overview of reading and interpreting research studies. Module two will introduce you to human randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and explain why RCTS are the primary source of data used to develop evidence-based recommendations in nutrition. You will also learn common types of research designs used in nutrition education.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Define the major types of peer-reviewed publications in nutrition and their relative strengths.
  • Describe guidelines for interpreting and applying research results to practice.
  • Differentiate among commonly used clinical and eduction-related nutrition interventions.
  • Differentiate among the types of study designs used in RCTs.
  • Evaluate clinical and nutrition education studies that inform guidelines, policy, and practice decisions.
This course meets the requirements for the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior competency 10.1 Analyze, evaluate, and interpret nutrition education research and apply it to practice.
